Transport Canada Enhances School Bus Safety
Transport Canada recently announced that perimeter visibility systems will be required on all new school buses as of November 1, 2027.
The systems use a series of cameras that allow bus drivers to detect people around the bus while the bus is stopped or travelling slowly, enhancing visibility beyond what is provided by mirrors alone. Canada is the first country to require this technology on school buses.
The new requirement follows a recommendation put forward by the Task Force on School Bus Safety in their 2020 report, which found that children are far more vulnerable while navigating outside the bus than riding inside.
